PITTSBURGH -- Some of the same bugs that infect computers have begun finding their way into cell phones.Experts say the threat is in its infant stages, but the viruses are designed to potentially pilfer valuable information as well as mess with your phone. The fancier the cell phone, the more likely it is to be infected. If it offers all the advantages of a computer, chances are it may also come with some of the same vulnerabilities.
"It's going to become more popular as it becomes more successful, and if people can be victimized by that, then they'll keep on expanding that role," said FBI agent Bill Shore, of the FBI's cyber crimes unit.Newer cell phones -- especially so-called smartphones -- allow you to easily check e-mail and surf the Internet. Those functions are fertile ground for hackers.According to a new report from an Ireland-based cell phone security company, it tracked 70,000 virus incidents per day a year ago. Now, that number is up to 100,000."It probably doesn't surprise me at all," said Tammy Merryman, who owns a smartphone. "I mean, once a virus can get into a computer, it's a mini computer."Shore said hackers often send bogus e-mails or text messages directing you to a Web page."Potentially, that could link you to a malicious Web site if you access the links in the e-mail," he said.Their goal is to steal your personal information or your contact numbers, so they can send messages to infect those people's phones."Would you be hesitant to do any banking on your phone? Call 4 Action reporter Aaron Saykin asked."I would, absolutely," said Bo Okubadjo, who owns a smartphone.Sometimes, you can tell if your phone has a virus if the e-mail and Internet are continually running slowly or you see a sudden surge in data charges on your monthly bill. Many wireless providers are able to block a large percentage of bogus messages, and some cell phone makers provide software to protect your phone. Make sure you stay up to date and check with them periodically.
