PITTSBURGH -- The Pennsylvania attorney general's office is suing over what it calls the largest telemarketing violation since the Do Not Call registry began.Call 4 Action reporter Aaron Saykin said anyone in Pennsylvania who reports an illegal call that results in a fine will be eligible to receive 10 percent of the money recovered, up to $100. Two companies -- one based in Baltimore, the other in State College, Pa. -- made about 500,000 illegal calls to people on the Do Not Call list, according to Attorney General Tom Corbett.
According to the lawsuit, the calls were peddling mortgages and loans, and some of them were made after 9 p.m. while others used high-pressure sales tactics. The civil penalty is $1,000 per call, which makes the maximum possible fine more than $50 million.Corbett's office offers a 10 percent reward up to a maximum of $100 if you report an illegal call, and they can catch the telemarketer."Instead of people just saying, 'They violated it, I'm just going to let it go,' this allows us to find the pattern and make a determination of who this individual is and go after these individuals," Corbett said.Complaints can be filed at the attorney general's Web site. You can also register your number for Pennsylvania's Do Not Call list on that site.
