WASHINGTON COUNTY, Pa. -- Veterans Day was marked with a ceremony at the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies in Cecil Township, Washington County.Friends, family and veterans gathered to pay their respects to those who came before them at the military cemetery dedicated just three years ago. The cemetery is meant to be the final resting place for up to 100,000 western Pennsylvania veterans. Nearly 2200 veterans rest there now.Claude Hutchinson, a director with the Department of Veterans Affairs praised the sacrifices those brave men and woman made for their country.
"A person who, at one significant point at his or her life, made out a blank check payable to the United States of America for any amount up to, and including life itself," Hutchinson said. The land for National Cemetery of the Alleghenies was picked from 11 proposed sites, and has its own history. It sits on land which was the flashpoint for the whiskey rebellion of 1794. The cemetey has an information center and is open for visitors. The memorial ceremony was timed to end precisely at 11 a.m. Tuesday to coincide with what used to be known as Armistice Day, which marked the end of World War I.The war ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918.
